You, I'm sure, will be able to let it shine. However, if the reader is lacking flair, then the fact that it's speech only limits what they can get their teeth stuck into. In the right hands, with plenty of silly voices, it's a deliciously funny story, with a devilish twist. The cut-down nature of the tale can be either a strength or a weakness. The humour isn't hammered home, but there's plenty of scope for the reader to play it up, and give the devious rabbit a sneaky voice. The text is sparse, with a strong sense of repetition throughout. I Want My Hat Back is a beautifully pared back picture book. How will the bear ever find his hat? Poor bear. The fox and frog don't know where it is, the rabbit is evasive, and the tortoise is more interested in climbing a rock. His pointy red hat is about the only thing that puts a smile on his face, and he just can't find it. As with all bears, he's a bit of a surly ol' thing. As things stand, liberals explain poverty through insurmountable structural issues, whereas conservatives highlight personal failings and poor life choices. The hard part is getting more of us to care. Spanning racism, social isolation, mass incarceration, the housing crisis, domestic violence, crack and opioid epidemics, welfare cuts and more, Desmond argues that poverty does not result from a lack of resources or good policy ideas. In Poverty, by America, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond examines the nature of American poverty today and the stories we tell ourselves about it. Why is there so much scarcity in this land of dollars? One in seven Americans live below the poverty line, a line which hasn't shifted over the last fifty years, despite the efforts of successive governments and extensive relief programs. The United States is the richest country on earth, yet has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. *A searing study of American poverty from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted* 'Desmond is utterly convincing: we must all become poverty abolitionists' Emily Kenway 'Essential and instructive, hopeful and enraging' Ann Patchett ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() She begins to see and hear things that she shouldn't. Her sister refuses to believe she is really Triss. There are things she can't quite remember, and things that just don't seem right. The story opens with Triss awakening after a mysterious accident. I would recommend this for children, teens and adults alike. The writing is gorgeous, full of lush but scary descriptions and the plot is so layered and thought-provoking. It's like a paranormal historical horror mystery. The story is full of metaphor, genuinely creepy scenes and an underlying tale about family and war. The main characters are young and there is nothing unsuitable for children, and yet this is far from your typical middle grade book. Sometimes I guess "I have never read anything like this" is the best kind of compliment.Ĭuckoo Song is best described as a dark fairy tale. Partly because they're supposed to be "middle grade" and partly because I couldn't really make sense of the blurbs - they sounded just. These small details will likely not bother young readers, who will be eager to find out if Bear makes his way home. While the themes are clear and compelling, certain plot points remain nebulous, such as how April is able to communicate so well with the bear (a gift briefly tied to her late mother) or how her father seems unconcerned with her wandering the island alone all day. Scientific facts and statistics are seamleassly integrated into the narrative, strengthening the book’s urgent tone. Gold’s debut middle grade novel is a bold, unapologetic look into the devastating effects of climate change and its impact on wildlife. The period at the end of the Enlightenment, the time in which Mary was writing, is explored in A Revolution of Feeling: The Decade That Forged The Modern Mind by Rachel Hewitt. Intellectual society listened – spurred to thoughtfulness by the radical turmoil of the French Revolution – although real social change takes much longer to achieve, as is still all too evident today. Written in 1792 it upholds the importance of education for women and attacks the sexual double standards prevalent at the time, articulating concepts which still resonate over 200 years later. She authored one of the books that form the foundations of the women’s rights movement: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. Mary Wollstonecraft was a radical and free thinker. ![]() However, today I’d like to go a little further back and look at mother and daughter Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Shelley.
